When the liberation of gays and lesbians movements started, they began to talk about what heterosexuality was. They set up sex and gender as a system based on biological factors such as genitalia. In this system there could only be two genders a man and a women, lesbians went against what had been stated to define what it meant to be a women based on the natural sex organs. Lesbian experience, what they go through in their life is different from the experiences and the life of heterosexual women, and Beauvoir wanted to understand this concept. She wanted to understand how lesbians lived experiences were different, from those lived experience of heterosexual females in the chapter of The Lesbian.
